Sooke All Sorts features all sorts of local writing

Cover Art by P. Pallot

From song lyrics to short fiction, memoir and poetry, Sooke All Sorts contains all sorts of writing from eighteen SWC members and five student prize winners.

This is the eleventh year we have hosted a student writing contest at Edward Milne Community School (EMCS) in Sooke and this anthology marks the fifth year of publishing the winning pieces. It was the contest that inspired us to begin publishing and we hope to continue for many more years.

The contest is written “live” at the school over the span of a few hours. Prompts, gathered from a variety of sources, are given to participants the night before. They are used for inspiration and one of them must be used within the story. Students are free to write fiction, creative non-fiction or poetry in response.

Student contest winners for 2018 are:

Prose:
1st – Michael Ross for “The Soldier”
2nd – Christina Seabrook for “Run”
HM – Colby Benty for “A Dire Situation…”

Poetry
1st – Max Walther for “The Gunslinger”
2nd – Colby Benty for “One Day, You Say”
HM – Ella Dennett for “Not even a Goodbye”

Books are $12 each and are currently available at the Artisan’s Garden and online. After June 18th they will also be available at the Sooke Region Museum, Well Read Books and Barking Dog Studio.
